42 researchers and practitioners from the forest industry, government, and academia visited the Blue Ridge forest management area north of Whitecourt. Led by Shane Sadoway of Blue Ridge and Sharon Meredith of FGrOW, the field tour focused on long-running experiments looking at two main silvicultural treatments: herbicide and thinning.

Milo Mihajlovich introduced our first stop: a herbicide monitoring plot.
The site was harvested and sprayed with herbicide to control broadleaf competition, but a small part was left untreated as a control.
The second site was at the Judy Creek Mixedwood Experiment, established in 2002.
The tour got to see a variety of different weeding treatments.
Though cool and crisp, it was a brilliant fall day and the dry conditions made the walking pleasant.
After lunch, the tour moved from herbicide to thinning.
Dick Dempster gave an overview of the Regenerated Lodgepole Pine trial.
Though not a part of the RLP, this nearby stand served as a good illustration of what the RLP has been finding.
This stand was pre-commercially thinned to different densities.
The tour group was very engaged, asking incisive questions and making the most of the day.
This tree marks a boundary between treatments.
Thanks to everyone for driving out and making the field tour such a success!
